In Celebration of Motherhood...

I just read that more phone calls are made on Mother's Day than any other day of the year. While I can't confirm this fact it's an interesting thought nonetheless. Mother's Day has become quite commercialized like many American holidays, yet taking a day to honor mothers is something I can get behind.

While mothers don't get paid time off it's nice to know there's a holiday out there to celebrate all that mothers do for their families. For many mamas its just another day, but I challenge you to take the day or at least part of the day to relax. What's that!? It's self-care. Incorporating self-care into part of every day is incredibly important for everyone, not just mothers, to rejuvenate, recharge, and rest. Let someone pamper you a little, take an easy walk, read a book, take a bath (or a shower without being interrupted!), nap, connect with your partner or friend, listen to music that makes you feel warm, do nothing. I know what a lot of you are thinking. "I don't have time for that!". Yes, you do. I worked with a mom whose only time to herself was in the car between dropping her daughter off at preschool and heading to work. 15 minutes was what she had, and she blasted her radio, sang, yelled, cried. Whatever she needed to do in those 15 minutes was hers and she cherished it. While it's not conventional it's what worked for her at the time.

Allow yourself to have at least one day that focuses on you. The more you take care of yourself, the more you'll have to give back to your family. It takes a lot of energy, patience, and love to be a mama. Happy Mother's Day!
